Half Measures
Recovery programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous talk about half measures. AA says that “half measures availed us nothing.”
I hear a lot of times in recovery that people tried to hold onto old ideas while trying to build a new life in recovery. I’ve also heard a lot people talk about how they never fully applied themselves to a life of recovery, whey they only did things “half way.” This is dangerous grounds to walk on, however.
Alcohol and drugs are “cunning, baffling, and powerful.” One will hear all the time that you can’t build a new life while holding onto an old life. The old and the new don’t mix. Old relationships must be built upon a new foundation. This foundation can one of understanding, love, respect, peace, loyalty, and integrity. We also can’t stay in recovery when we are constantly going to the barbershop. The adage is, “If you go to the barbershop long enough, you’re going to get a haircut.” This is quite true, however.
Have you ever seen anyone change their life, but still keep doing the same things that made them miserable or destroyed their life? I have not seen this yet, therefore, I think it’s important to understand that when we are faced with the opportunities for growth, when we are the turning point in our lives, what decisions we need to make – half measures or full measures.
Thus, my challenge is this – are you doing half measures today?
Peace & love to all
