The remaster of The Last of Us Part II for PS5 received first marks – fast loading times, minimal graphics improvements and bonus content with restrictions
On review aggregator sites Metacritic And OpenCritic The first editions of The Last of Us Part II Remastered have been released, an improved version of Naughty Dog’s action-adventure The Last of Us Part II, specially improved for PS5.
How conveyed Digital Foundry is technically not far from the backwards compatible version for PS5 (with a 60fps patch in 2021) for PS4.
The remaster cannot offer any significant improvements in graphics and performance compared to the previous version, but it does have significantly faster (up to three times) loading times.
Aside from technical improvements, The Last of Us Part II Remastered includes behind-the-scenes content such as developer commentary and levels cut from the final game, but the latter is quite fleeting.
Additionally, the remaster includes a roguelike mode, No Return, with multiple playable characters. As the authors of the reviews note, “No Return” is really captivating at first, but quickly becomes boring (there is no plot).
Despite these flaws, critics considered the remaster to be the best version of The Last of Us Part II available, especially for those unfamiliar with the original version of the game. The project has a 91 out of 100% on Metacritic and OpenCritic.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered launches on PS5 on January 19th. Owners of the game on PS4 can upgrade and transfer saves/trophies to the enhanced version for $10. The cost of the remaster for new users is $50.
