The GTA publisher found the new Remedy logo unacceptable and began a dispute over the trademark
Last spring, Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment (Alan Wake II, Control, Max Payne Duology) performed for the first time in 24 years Updated probably didn’t think that this move would cause a protest from the GTA publisher, since he doesn’t know the logo.
Remedy filed a trademark application in May 2023 for the updated logo, which includes a stylized letter R. The trademark was published in June and challenged in September.
As the portal noted RespawnFirst Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of Grand Theft Auto and owner of the studio that develops games in the series represented by Rockstar Games, opposed the new Remedy logo.
Take-Two mentioned the possibility of “public confusion” between the logos of Remedy (the new one) and Rockstar, which also uses a stylized letter R as its logo.
Accordingly records The UK Intellectual Property Office website still lists the trademark for the new Remedy logo as “Challenged,” so the process is ongoing.
This isn’t the first time Take-Two has made such a claim. In March 2021, the publisher forced studio Hazelight to abandon its attempts to trademark its co-op platformer It Takes Two.
The situation is particularly notable since Remedy is currently working with Rockstar on remakes of the first two Max Paynes. The Finnish studio sold the rights to the series to Take-Two in 2002.
